Stargazing which features in Matryoshka was shortlisted for the 2021 Bridport Prize.

In the salmon pink painted waiting room
she reads a pamphlet about diabetes.

In the box room through the door
the nurse collects her blood in a vacutainer
and asks is this decision supported?

Yes & no,
like everything in this fucking world.

In a another room beyond that
she is asked do you want to look?
At the miniature milky way on the screen.

Years from now she might carry a star
but now she’s no divine mother, only a telescope.
